Taking Part in Education Community During Pandemic

By Safira HasnaI joined a volunteer program in an education community called Gerakan Suka Baca in Depok, Indonesia, founded in 2016 to improve literacy awareness, especially among children. Gerakan Suka Baca (GSB) has two main focuses: 1) to teach elementary school children who are tissues, sellers, and buskers, in the street of the Depok area. 2) to open a reading booth at Depok city park to improve literacy awareness by reading books aloud and making crafts or coloring book for children visiting the park. GSB also regularly holds discussion forums in collaboration with other communities, usually to discuss books or films.  Another program commonly held is educational tours such as taking the children to museums or other educational places as a form of appreciation for t...

Mind the Gap – Bridging the Digital Divide in Malaysia

By Irsyad HamilinThe first wave of COVID-19 in Malaysia leads to the sudden closure of all learning institutions nationwide. As a result, education in Malaysia has changed drastically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. On 13June 2020, Veveonah Mosibin, a student of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) make the headlines across Malaysia after posting an 11-minute video on YouTube entitled “24 Hours On Tree Challenge” featuring her climbing a tree where she spent the night just to get better internet access for her final exam. Unfortunately, whilst the treetop video challenge of hers opened many opportunities, it also highlights the huge gap of the digital divide in many parts of Malaysia. Veveonah’s case...

MUN – A Simulation for Realization

By Margianta S.J.D.I was a debater for quite a long time.I participated in debate competitions during high school and joined a debate club on my campus. The thrill of arguing and teamwork had me very excited in a debate. Nevertheless, the more competitions that I joined, the more familiar I got with the pattern of debates and felt incompatible with it.I realized that I did not belong to such a competitive nature of debating. I felt discomfort for having to be highly defensive in protecting my arguments by taking down the ones from the other side. My mentor scolded me for appearing less-adamant and too persuasive, making me more compatible in speech competitions rather than debates.Soon after that, I decided to do make my shot in Model United Nations (MUN). My senio...

Pursuing a Postgraduate Degree on Full Scholarship – Getting in is just the beginning

By Suthida ChangI am fortunate to be a full scholarship holder for MA International Relations and International Business at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China (UNNC). Being a picky learner, I was looking for a crosscultural experience with British education standards and a curriculum that catered to my multidisciplinary academic interests; UNNC ticked all of those boxes.Like many students around the world, my postgraduate program was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Classes and examinations were moved online but coordinating between different student and lecturer timezones was a major challenge. Now that I’m approaching the end of my degree, it is time to look back over my one-year journey and reflect on the lessons I’ve learned, especially the ones outside o...
